watch, read, listen: february

Film: Mama

As soon as I watched the movie trailer for Guillermo del Toro's latest film 'Mama' I knew I had to see it. I was hoping it would be a good, proper horror film - the type that leaves you clinging to your dates arm and trying your hardest not to jump and scream at the scary parts - and I was right. Despite being a horror the film had some emotional parts, and I found myself with a lump in my throat at the ending. Mama herself terrifying, and I spent most of the time she was on-screen covering my eyes!

I'd definitely recommend going to see it - the special effects was a bit over the top and silly at times (especially the ending - what were those butterflies about?) but it's worth watching if you like scary films! It's not one of those terrible cliche horror movies, either.

Book: Blog Inc.: Blogging for Passion, Profit, and to Create Community

I'd had my eye on this book for a while and snapped it up for £5 in the Urban Outfitters sale. I've not read it cover to cover, but it's been an interesting read dipping in and out of chapters when I get a spare few minutes. It covers the basics (and I mean the real basics - I didn't feel the need to read the 'what is a blog' section) right up to giving advice on becoming a full time blogger, how to take better photographs and overcoming the dreaded bloggers block.

I found some of the sections a bit basic, but there's still a lot of valuable and interesting information to be found in this book!

Music: Foals - Holy Fire
Click to listen to my favourite song on Youtube

Foals are a band I've liked since hearing their first album Antidotes, which to this day is one of my all time favourite albums, way back in 2008. I've followed them since then, seeing them live a few times over the years, and I'm pretty certain that I could never not like anything they released. Which is why I had high hopes for 'Holy Fire' - even after reading on numerous reviews about how disappointed people are that Foals are sounding too 'trendy' on their lastest release.

Sure, the music sounds more mainstream and poppy than previous albums but it's still easily recognisable as Foals (I don't think you could ever not recognise Yannis Philippakis' voice!) and bloody catchy. I've lost count of the amount of times I've been caught having a cheeky sing along and dance in my car!

I'm always on the look out for some new recommendations so share what you've been loving lately in the comments!

  12. I think Foals are pretty cool. However, not expecting much from their new release. I saw them live a couple of years ago and it was slightly disappointing. The demographic of the crowd put me off. Lots of crowdsurfing 'skin's teens (I'm in my late twenties). Yannis is totally devine though with that dark, dark beard. Looks like they want to be bigger and not better. This site helps me to write my essay on this theme.
