goodbye shell

double wear foundation in 'shell' - estee lauder

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that Double Wear is my favourite foundation, ever. I've been wearing it for years and it offers the right amount of coverage, and is also one of the only foundations I've found which offers a light enough shade for my pale skin - shell.

So imagine my shock when I visisted my local Estee Lauder counter to buy a new bottle only to be told that they had discontinued shell. Yes, discontinued, it's gone.

I instantly panicked, but the lady at the counter told me they had brought out two new shades suitable for pale skinned girls like me, and tried them out on my skin. None of them are quite as good a match as shell for me which leaves me wondering what I'm going to do when my less than half empty bottle of Shell runs out. The lady at the counter shared my disappointment and recommended contacting Estee Lauder and expressing my concern, but I doubt that convince them to bring it back!

Can anyone recommend some foundations which offer the same sort of coverage and lasting power as Double Wear and are suitable for my ghost skin?

  1. i am quite pale and have been using the new bobbi brown longwear foundation recently. i'm loving it! i don't know how it compares to the double wear but i would definitely recommend you go down and see if they can match you to something and see how you like it :)

    2. On the Estee Lauder facebook page they say that they are bringing Shell back April/May 2013. The new formulation is nowhere near as good so may not be all good news!

  2. I'm having this exact problem, I'm 'shell' too! I've heard good things about Laura Mercier's Silk Creme foundation so I'll be giving that a go! I am truly heartbroken though xx

  3. Have you tried the Dainty Doll range by Nicola Roberts? She created it especially for fair-skinned girls, might be worth a try? x

  4. WHAT?? Oh noo this is awful! I wore Double Wear for the first time in ages on Friday and had forgotten how absolutely perfectly Shell matches me. Boo! I wear Bobbi Brown foundations in Alabaster but it's a tiny bit yellower than the pinky Shell so I don't love it quite as much. I'm going to have to be so precious with it now! xx

  5. oh no!! would be devestated if they stopped my shade :( I use doublewear too but have the sahde ecru. YSL have some good coverage foundations but don't think they do very light shades.

  6. i find shell even too dark for my skin :( so i'm probably not going to be of much help, but i find revlon colourstay's foundation amazing! i use shade buff, which isn't the palest, but it's a healthy colour (isn't orange!) and can blend easily. they do have a paler shade, ivory, which is too pink undertoned for my skin - so i've tried mixing them both and that's the best combination!

the staying power is great, although it does require to be set (it's quite dewy)
still, i would totally recommend it!

  7. Have you tried any of the "double wear light" foundation shades? I'm the palest shade in that and love it, it's so long lasting and great coverage despite supposedly being a 'lighter' version of the original. X

  8. Have you tried going into No7 and having the Match Made service? I was matched up to Calico which is a perfect match for my fair skin x

  9. I like L'oreal Infaillible in Porcelain. It's super pale. I also like the Dainty Doll range. Their foundation is really long lasting on my oily skin. Try shade no. 2.

  10. i decided to go for laura mercier silk creme as a replacement. the shade soft ivory is probably a tiny bit yellower than shell but its just as pale, pretty full coverage & lasts xx

  11. omg its the only foundation thats pale enough and that i arnt allergic to, what should i do now? thats ridiculous! xx

  12. NO!! that is absolutely the worst news :( what a rediculous thing to do, I love double wear as well.

I would reccomend Illamasqua Skin Base if you have a counter near by the get matched at. I got matched at shade 8 & it's far too dark so I mix it with moisturiser. YSL touche eclat foundation is lovely too- quite sheer but it lasts. I am beige rose I believe.

They still have shell on debenhams website, go go go.

  14. Honestly contact them and they will listen!
I had the exact same problem with my No7 foundation and LOADS of people complained on the websites review system and they brought it back :)
Good luck! It's so annoying being pale sometimes xo

  15. I'm so upset about this :( A pale skinned friend on mine has recommended Bobbi Brown, but not sure if the coverage will be there.

The only thing I can say that might be helpful is I've got a wee pump from Mac for £3.50 (I think!) that fits the doublewear bottle and I'm hoping that the pump will help by bottle last longer by using less since I waste product every time with the tip out method :/

  16. That really sucks :( I remember panicking when my favourite foundation was out of stock in EVERY single boots I seemed to go in, was worried it was discontinued but there was just a slight shortage. Hope you find a perfect one soon!

  17. i second loreal infallible, they actually do really good pale shades for a "drugstore" brand and they are definitely more pink toned

  22. laura mercier sheer creme in ivory. good coverage and no where near as drying as shell. what the what with stopping pale pale colours though?? x

  23. Have you tried the max coverage one? I used double wear in Ecru but it was so orange on me and the others were too pale - I use shade 2 in the max which is nice and warm though shade 1 is probably a better match (though I look ghostly just as I do without make up)! And the light one too! Don't give up on EL its the best foundation EVERRR!!

  24. Dude, just found out. Shell too. Luckily must have bought my bottle before they discontinued. Heartbroken. What's a girl with acne prone, oily, pale skin going to do without it? :(

  25. Awesome post! I will keep an on eye on your blog.

  26. I recently abandoned Double Wear for the Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua and I LOVE IT. I have super dry skin and I think the finish is so much nicer for me than the double wear. I was a shell girl, and in the Chanel I wear shade 12 'Beige Rose' (I live in the US but I assume the UK version has the same name, sometimes they change them). The name is deceiving and sounds strange but it suits my pink undertones nicely. It's certainly a pricey foundation but I only use a very little bit and I love the result using the Real Techniques Stippling Brush.

  27. I am like a milk bottle (seriously) and I use Bareminerals (LOVE LOVE LOVE) but I hear that Dainty Doll are also awesome :)

  31. I am also completely at a loss at what to do without shell :(. Really hope they bring it back! x

  34. I'm not sure when they're bringing it back, but I'm so glad they are! And hopefully it's the OLD formula considering everyone has been complaining about this crappy formula. Words cannot express my delight to hear they are bringing it back, because I was frantic searching for a replacement foundation to use after my 10 free samples of shell have run out. Nothing compares!

  35. It took me forever to find the perfect shade and finally I found Shell. Even tho I don't need so much coverage on an everyday basis, I sheer it out with the beauty blender and some moisturizer. It's awesome 'cus when I need that extra coverage and I want it to last all day for school, it stays on ALL day. I'm so upset they've discontinued this, so sad, now I have to go out and look for a new foundation which is very hard to do because I'm pale and everyone's lightest shades are always too dark for me. Can anyone recommend any foundations and colors they've tried?
Colorstay in Ivory is too light
They only one I found that matches me (yellow undertones) is the Covergirl Aqua Smooth liquid foundation but this is very natural and not long wearing ... It's okay for an everyday look if your just running around or chilling with the boyfriend
So any other suggestions and colors please ???
If you wear Shell, tell me what colors and brands have you tried

  36. I am so annoyed that Shell has been discontinued - I have used it for years and even used it on my wedding day last year and I was so pleased with the photos. I've tried Cool Bone and Ivory Nude and the lightest shade in the Double Wear light shade and all of these are too dark and yellow. I'm spending a fortune trying to find an alternative shade! Does anyone have any idea if Estee Lauder are actually bringing Shell back and, if so, when?

  37. I talked to Estee Lauder as of March 2013, and they said they are bringing Shell back!!!!!!!!!

  38. I have used Shell Double Wear for 20 years, and there is nothing like it! But, when I was put to the challenge when they discontinued it, I Googled, I sampled, and I landed on Dior Forever Foundation. It has a beautiful finish and great staying power, and I love the pump on the bottle so that I don't waste the makeup. It isn't Doublewear, but it is a great replacement until they bring Shell back. I wear the #10. Give it a try! Clearly, there are many of us that use the Shell Douuble Wear, and the company needs to really look at the sales of a product before they pull it! :)
