hair routine: the tools

My most asked questions are about my hair so I thought I would create a post about my hair routine and share with you how I style it (or not!) and which products I use. In this post I'll mention the tools I use to style my hair, and I'll follow it up with a post about which products I use.

I do feel like a bit of a cheat writing this post because I'm lucky to have naturally straight hair, which after a quick upside down blow-dry will dry looking almost exactly as it does in the above photo, only not with quite as much volume. That being said, there are some tools that I use which make drying and styling that bit easier.

GHD Brush* - buy here
I used to be a cheap £1 Primark hairbrush kind of girl, but since using this GHD brush I've changed my ways. I always thought larger barrels would be more difficult to work with, but this brush makes my long hair easy to manage and helps create lots of volume in even the quickest lazy-girl blow dry. The bristles are also extremely soft, which is great if you have a sensitive scalp like me, and I find it really easy to clean too.

Back Comb - buy here
I use this to add some volume into my hair after styling it. I usually tip my head upside down and backcomb the underneath section, applying plenty of hairspray and then repeat with the top layers and around my parting. I still struggle to make my hair stay so volumous all day long, but this comb is definitely the best I've used and it's small enough to carry in your bag for a quick fix throughout the day.

GHD Styler - buy here
I'm a recent GHD convert, after getting a pair for my birthday in August. Having naturally straight hair I don't have much need for straighteners but I find that they help fix any awkward bits of hair that flick out after my quick blow-dry, and I do like curling my fringe under a little. Being completely honest, I personally wouldn't rate GHDs better than any other straighteners I've had for their straightening power, but that's because my hair doesn't need it and I never spend more than 30 seconds using them at a time. They do leave my hair incredibly soft and shiny though.

Enrapture Encode Styler - buy here
When I decide to curl my hair, this is my tool of choice. I posted a full review of it which you can read here, and use it on setting 1-2-3 most of the time. I've never used a hair styler as easy as this one before and really love the different looks it can create!

    1. I wash, blowdry and straighten my hair everyday - sometimes I curl it and sometimes I just use the backcomb brush instead. x

  3. You're hair is lovely, and I know that even if I buy all those things it won't look anywhere near as nice as yours haha (: I may invest in that backcomber though, I just use an average comb and it seems to do nothing for me. My mum's always telling me off for fluffing up my hair throughout the day to ensure it has volume haha (: xx

    1. Aww thank you! I love the back comb so much, I haven't used anything as good as it to create volume. I thought backcombing my hair would damage it but it hasn't made any difference! x

  4. A back combing brush is the best hair tool in the world!!! When my hair curbs I find it beat impossible to get a normal brush or comb through it- but a back combing brush works perfectly :)

    1. Sometimes I wish my hair was anything but straight! It's so fine and flat by itself. I guess we always want what we don't have! ;) x

  10. Ooooh those back comb brushes, are they really better than using an ordinary brush or comb? I'm so RUBBISH at backcombing and I don't know if its my stubbornly flat hair or my stupid technique! :( x
