fresh face masks

Although I've been using Lush products for a few years now, it wasn't until the beginning of this year that I tried their fresh face masks. They have quite a lot of different face masks, all aimed at different skin types, but my favourite two are Cosmetic Warrior and Catastrophe Cosmetic. I aim to use a face mask 2-3 times per week as that's what was recommended by the people from Lush.

Cosmetic Warrior sounds quite scary when you read the ingredients list and see the words fresh garlic and fresh free range eggs but don't let it put you off, this mask works wonders! The garlic and tea tree oil are anti-septic and work to clear your skin of spots whilst the addition of honey moisturises your face and softens your skin. Having dry skin I usually avoid products with tea tree oil in them but this product doesn't leave your skin feeling dry and tight like some products do. It does smell a little bit garlicy - but it also has a slight tea tree smell and isn't off putting like it seems.

It's quite a soft and creamy product and applies easily onto your skin, drying after 5-10 minutes. As I mentioned on my review of Angels On Bare Skin I'm not prone to spots and only suffer maybe 1 or 2 per month so I'm not able to comment on how well it deals with blemish prone skin. However I use this product once or twice a week and do believe it helps keep spots away. When I do have a spot they clear up quickly too. I mainly use this to moisturise my skin though. A face mask always makes my skin feel so much healthier.

Catastrophe Cosmetic is a lovely purple colour and contains fresh blueberries and almond oil. This mask is designed to calm and soothe irritated skin, reduce redness and also moisturise. I don't have irritated skin, I do suffer from little bit of redness (it doesn't bother me much as make up does cover it), but I do need all the help I can get with keeping my skin soft and moisturised and this is the best face mask I have ever used for that!

It's not as creamy as Cosmetic Warrior and sometimes I can find it a bit difficult to apply to my skin because of this. It dries really quickly and gives you a stiff face which did worry me as a dry skin sufferer but upon washing it off my skin is left silky smooth and feels refreshed. I haven't noticed a difference in the redness but as I say I don't have much redness and I actually notice it only comes out after washing my face since I get patches of it all over my body after a bath or shower too. My skin does feel baby soft after using this though with means I buy it over and over again.

One thing that put me off buying the face masks previously was the short shelf life of 1 month, however I keep my face masks in the fridge as recommended (you have no idea how great it feels to apply a cold face mask to your skin!) and actually use them after the expiry date. My Cosmetic Warrior actually 'expired' on the 03/08/11 and I haven't noticed any different in the quality of the product or how well it works. The same goes with most other Lush products that have expiry dates.

You might also have noticed that the Catastrophe Cosmetic doesn't have a proper label on it, well that's because I got it for free in store one day. Yes, a whole pot - completely free! Because of the short shelf life, sometimes the stores have to get rid of face masks before they reach a certain date and instead of reducing the price like any other shop would do, the lovely people at Lush give them away for free! A lot of the time they have a few different masks for free and will offer you one to fit your skin type too.

There's still quite a lot of face masks from Lush that I haven't got round to trying yet so I'd love to hear about your experiences with them.

  1. I love Catastrophe Cosmetic too :) I love that it seems to make my already pale skin even more pale and even. I have tried most of them but this is the one I always go back too! Mask of magnaminty is also great xo

  2. I've always wanted to buy some Lush face masks but the expiration date always put me off... I'm definitely going to have to try some Cosmetic Warrior as my skin is prone to becoming very dry after I've used anti-blemish products on my monthly blemishes.

Also dying to buy the chocolatey Cupcake face mask for obvious reasons lol

  3. I love your reviews! For redness you could maybe try a dab of Cupcake? Before I started taking the pill I used to get really red, sore, flaky skin around my nose (plus the usual teenage spot attacks, ugh). If you can get a sample, just try smoothing some Cupcake over the red areas for 5 minutes or so - works a treat!

ps: commenting back - I've never tried the mushroom/halloumi thing, it sounds lush! Definitely one to try :)

  5. I recently purchased Angels on bare skin after reading your review and I love it so far. I'm looking forward to trying a face mask once I collect my 5 black pots! I would seriously have to smell the cosmetic warrior though to be convinced about the garlic?! I'm sure that it will be divine as all lush products are though!
